Action on Addiction Family & Friends Support Service

Families

You don’t have to misuse alcohol and drugs to suffer from alcohol and drug misuse.

Until very recently, families and carers were overlooked, as people have tended to focus almost exclusively on treating the alcohol or drug misuse.

Over the years Action on Addiction’s Families Plus unit has developed a number of interventions to help families and family members, including:

A brief residential programme for individual adults: The residential programme is for family members and others who are affected by somebody else’s substance misuse or addiction. The programme provides a safe, supportive environment where you can learn how to cope more effectively and improve the quality of your life. This 5-day programme is held regularly throughout the year.

A community-based (carer) support group for adults: Support groups meet regularly to offer help by providing time to talk, increased understanding and alternative coping strategies. Experienced counsellors facilitate the groups and they are held once a week at various locations. They are free and confidential.

A programme called (Moving Parents and Children Together) to support the children of substance misusing parents: A weekly programme (8 weeks) specifically designed to help children ages 10-17. Children, young people and parents from different families are invited to meet together where they are helped by a team of four professional facilitators to work together to improve family life.

Action on Addiction takes action to disarm addiction. We do this through research, treatment, family support, education and training.
