The most difficult step in treating any addiction is for the addict to admit that there is a problem in the first place. Most of us are in denial, not prepared to admit to ourselves or to others that we have a problem for fear of having to stop using our drug (or other addiction) of choice.
While it may be painfully clear to those around us that we need help, our condition prevents us from seeing it and all other matters and rational thought are put to one side.
If anyone tries to confront us we feel threatened, reading any intervention as an attempt to prohibit our next usage.
Unfortunately, until we are entirely ready to accept help and become a willing patient, any treatment is unlikely to succeed.
